There is an "Anping Fish Market" by the sea in Anping, Tainan City, Taiwan. Unlike the usual tourist fish markets that open in daytime, this is a wholesale market where fishing boats unload their catch directly, open from midnight to 6am every day. Watching these hard-working people at night, day after day, bears witness to the diligent side of Taiwanese life.
To avoid disturbing the market staff, I brought my lightweight OM-4Ti film camera to shoot here, using black-and-white Kodak Tri-X400 and Kodak 500T colour negative movie film — the latter a tungsten-balanced stock that renders more pleasing colour than daylight film under the market's bare bulbs. Anping Fish Market turned out to be a wonderful subject; the results from two nights of shooting were very satisfying, and I may well keep returning to it.
